Katie Piper is a brave young woman rebuilding her life after surviving a brutal attack where sulphuric acid was thrown in her face.

Before the attack, Katie was at the beginning of a budding career in modelling and TV – a glowing future for a young, vibrant woman.

Piper had hoped for a full-time career in the media, but in March 2008 in North London, sulphuric acid was thrown at her face by Stefan Sylvestre. The acid attack, which blinded Piper in one eye, was arranged by Piper’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel Lynch. Both Sylvestre and Lynch were arrested and are serving jail time for their crimes.

Katie’s strong spirit shines through her ordeal as she has turned to helping others who face similar challenges.

The Katie Piper Foundation was set up to make a difference to burn survivors with the vision of creating advanced burn and scar management and rehabilitation clinics accessible to anybody who would benefit from specialised treatments.

The burn rehabilitation clinics will include daily pressure therapy using controlled, standardised and customised care with the help of LPG Endermologie machines, manual massage, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and silicone treatment, plus psychological support.

Katie Piper is proof that disfigurement doesn’t have to destroy lives and its her mission to make the best of the sad trauma she has endured.

Katie has tirelessly shared her story in the hope she can increase awareness and support burn victims by sharing information about the kind of rehabilitation she had and her experiences in getting to where she is today

Katie received a combination of simple and cost efficient treatments proven to be most effective in improving the appearance of burns and scars.

These included intensive deep tissue massage, one-to-one specially adapted physiotherapy exercises, Endermology machines that work at softening the skin and making it more malleable, hydrotherapy and high pressure jet therapy and silicone treatments alongside the wearing of pressure garments.

Most of us know drinking pure water is essential to life – so what’s in our water that’s potentially unhealthy?

Chlorine and lead is in everybody’s water, but there are also traces of pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, bacteria. Really, every chemical we use in our society works its way into our water supplies.

What people aren’t aware of is that municipal water treatment doesn’t take those things out. It’s designed to kill bacteria, take out the visible particles, but does not take out synthetic organic chemicals; we need to do that in our own homes.

What can those chemicals do to our bodies?

Synthetic organic chemicals increase the risk of degenerative disease and cancer. Almost all types of cancer are linked to increased exposure of synthetic organic chemicals; pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, trihalomethanes; the things that happen when they put chlorine in your water.

Colon cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer have all been directly linked to an increased consumption in synthetic chemicals.

What to do… bottled water?

Bottled water doesn’t necessarily assure you that you’re getting chemical free water. The regulations that govern bottled water are more lapsed than the ones that govern tap water. Bottled water is less regulated than tap water so it’s a misconception people have that bottled water is necessarily any purer than tap water.

Most studies show that bottled water contains at least most of the chemicals that tap water does. Any water that’s stored in a plastic bottle is going to contain some of the chemicals from that plastic that leach into the water.

Filtering your water in your own home doesn’t have the environmental impact that bottled water does of throwing away plastic bottles everyday. Bottled water is more expensive, it’s less convenient and tragic on the environment. 60 million plastic bottles get thrown into landfills every day in America alone.

The only way to get chemical free water is to filter it in your own home…

It’s less expensive

It’s more convenient

It’s better quality

It’s environmentally friendly

You can fill your own refillable bottles right at your kitchen sink with a good quality home water filter and you’ve got better quality filtered water at 1/10 of the price.

What about the water we bathe and shower in?

All the most recent studies such as the American Journal of Public Health and the World Health Organization have published reports that say we take in 3 times the chemicals when we shower than we do from drinking water.

The steam that you inhale plus the pores of your skin are open because of the warn water and you absorb chemicals through your lungs and your skin. So it’s at least as important to make sure the water you’re showering and bathing in is chemical free water, as well as your drinking water.

With a standard water testing kit available from any pool supply shop, you can test the chlorine levels in your own water. When we tested our water, we found the tap water to be borderline as what’s considered safe to swim in, so it’s pretty easy to grasp that it’s probably not the best water to be drinking, showering and bathing in.

What should we do in our homes?

Filter your water…

There’s many ways to filter your water, point of use water filtration; a water filter can be installed in the kitchen either on the bench, fitted quickly and easily to your existing tap or under the benchtop with a separate tap for your filtered water so you can easily filter your drinking water, cooking water, water you’re making beverages with; coffees, teas, juices, etc.

In your shower; shower filtration, you can easily install a filter in your shower or there’s central filtration – a whole house water filter, which can be installed very easily and very economically.

With a whole house filter, for not much more than $1000 you can filter all your water throughout your entire household where you’re bathing, drinking, showering, cooking, laundry, everything in good healthy chemical free water.

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, is a disease of the teeth that affects individuals of all ages, although it is more common in children and young adults. Dental caries occurs when the tooth enamel is destroyed. Decay begins at the tooth’s hard external surface, and may advance to internal structures of the tooth including the dentin and pulp. The earlier decay is treated, the better chance of saving the tooth.

How does tooth decay happen?

The bacteria inside of the mouth changes the food (primarily sugars and starches) we eat into acids. Over a period of time, the bacteria and acids form a sticky deposit called dental plaque that clings to the teeth. If the plaque is not removed, the acids will destroy the tooth’s enamel surface –resulting in holes or cavities. Sugar and starches (such as candy, cakes, cookies, milk and pop) are responsible for much of tooth decay, but sour or acidic foods (such as lemons and fruit juices), also contribute to decay because they change the pH (acidity level) in the mouth. If left untreated, the decay will progress and can lead to tooth infection. Children’s teeth primarily decay in the grooves. In addition to the grooves, older adults decay in other areas, including the roots of the teeth, which may be exposed as a result of receding gums.

How do you prevent tooth decay?

Taking good care of your teeth, eating nutritious foods and visiting the dentist on a regular basis will help prevent cavities. Here are some guidelines for preventing tooth decay:

Brushing twice a day with a toothpaste

Cleaning between the teeth daily with floss

Cleaning the teeth and gums daily with a Hydro Floss® oral irrigator

Eat well-balanced meals and limit snacking

Visiting the dentist on a regular basis for check-ups and cleanings.
If brushing is not possible, the next best thing is to rinse the mouth with water to neutralize the acids and change the pH level in the mouth, which may curb tooth decay.

When should you contact a dentist?

At least every six months for a cleaning and a thorough examination.
You should consult a dentist if you experience any problems or need emergency care.

Spread the mixture onto a solid sheet using a spatula, making sure the mixture stands only a few millimeters tall – the thicker the cracker, the harder to eat, the longer to dry and the shorter the shelf life.

Score the size of the crackers you’d like with a knife or spatula before dehydrating.

Dry at 72 degrees celcius for 2 hours and then 57 – 60 degrees celcius overnight.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an inflammation or infection of the gums (gingiva) that is an early stage of periodontal disease (gum disease). Healthy gums appear pink in color. Gingivitis causes the gums to become inflamed and swollen and bleed easily when they are brushed or flossed. Gingivitis is reversible and there is no permanent damage to the gums or teeth when treated early. If allowed to progress, the infection can advance below the gum line and cause periodontal disease. Gum disease, left untreated, can destroy the soft tissue, bone and ligaments that support the teeth. Teeth may become loose and then fall out. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Why does it occur?

Gingivitis often results from poor oral health care. Individuals who do not brush or floss their teeth regularly or correctly; increase their chances of developing gingivitis.

How does it happen?

A combination of bacteria, saliva and acids in the mouth form a sticky deposit called dental plaque that clings to the teeth. Plaque that is not removed from the teeth hardens into hard calculus (tartar), which irritate the gums.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include gums that are tender, red and swollen. The gums may bleed when brushed or flossed, and it can also cause bad breath. In some cases, there may be no obvious symptoms.

How do you treat gingivitis?

If you have inflamed gums or your teeth bleed during brushing or flossing, you need to visit a dentist or periodontist. The first step is to have the teeth cleaned professionally to remove the soft plaque and tartar. Brushing and flossing at home cannot remove the hard deposits or calculus. Oral irrigating with the Hydro Floss® will help soften the hard deposits or calculus.

How do you prevent gingivitis?
Brush your teeth twice a day to remove the bacteria from the teeth.
Use the Hydro Floss® oral irrigator daily to remove bacteria and food.
Eat a well-balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
Visit your dentist on a regular basis for an exam and cleaning.

Having healthy dehydrated food on hand is an easy answer for the often heard request “I’m hungry, there’s nothing to eat!” Correctly dehydrated food is high in nutrients and living enzymes which provide nutrition and energy.

Yogurt and fresh fruit can be pureed, sweetened and spiced to make high energy, nutritious snack food.

Simply select ripe or slightly overripe produce that blends and tastes well together. Wash and remove any blemishes, stems or pits and peel the produce if desired.

Puree the produce with or without some yogurt in a blender until smooth.

Pour the mixture onto a solid sheet and place on the tray of your food dehydrator with the temperature set at 65?C. The average time for fruit leather is 4 – 6 hours. Alternatively, you can dehydrate on a lower temperature of 55?C for 10 – 12 hours.

When the fruit leather has dried, it will be a bit shiny and non-sticky to touch. Allow it to cool and peel it from the tray.

Roll into a tight cylindrical shape and store in an airtight container.

Try any of the following combinations for creating a healthy snack food recipe…

strawberries & yogurt

bananas & pineapple with a sprinkle of cinnamon

seasonal berries and peaches with a dash of honey

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease or periodontitis. There are various stages of gum disease, and the two most common forms are gingivitis and adult periodontitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation or infection of the gums gingiva) that is an early stage of periodontal disease. When left untreated, gingivitis may progress to periodontal disease, which can progress to the loss of teeth. Only a professional –a dentist or periodontist –can diagnose gum disease, which often is painless. Research shows that periodontal disease may also be linked to heart, lung, kidney and respiratory disease, and to premature birth.

How does gum disease progress?

A combination of bacteria and acids in the mouth form a sticky deposit called dental plaque that clings to the teeth. Plaque that is not removed from the teeth hardens into calculus and tartar, which aggravate the gums. Pockets (filled with plaque) form between the teeth and gums –causing the irritated gums to detach or pull away from the teeth. At this point, the infection has advanced below the gum line and it can then destroy the soft tissue, bone and ligaments that support the teeth. The teeth may become abscessed and loose, and even fall out. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

What are the symptoms of periodontitis?

The early symptoms of periodontitis (gingivitis) are inflamed, swollen gums that bleed easily when they are brushed or flossed. Many times bad breath is present and there are times when there is little or no pain in the early stages. The late stage symptoms of periodontitis are loose teeth, spaces in between the teeth, pain upon chewing, pus around the teeth or gums, or abscessed teeth. Receding gums may be a symptom and the tooth may appear to look longer because the gums are withdrawing. Also the teeth may be sensitive to cold, hot and sugars.

Who is at risk of gum disease?

Periodontal disease is not hereditary, but it may play a role in the progression of the disease. Individuals with diabetes and those on certain medications may be at risk for periodontitis. Use of tobacco in any form can cause periodontal disease to advance more rapidly.

According to the Australian Health Department, 75 minutes of walking per week will improve health & fitness levels significantly.

Get active and walk

Walking is low impact and benefits include improved cardiovascular fitness, stronger bones and reduced body fat, plus it’s suitable for almost everyone.

Seven Top Walking Tips…

Look for walking opportunities; park your car a little further away from your destination

Get off public transport or the elevator one stop earlier and walk!

Walk for 30 minutes per day or set a distance each day and stick to it

Become a tourist in your own town and take the nature or scenic walks on occasion

Regular leisurely walks around your neighbourhood may lead to new friends!

Make walking a pleasure by having the correct footwear and clothing to suit conditions

Before walking, remind yourself how much better you will feel afterwards!

Building physical activity into your life

Physical activity built into a daily lifestyle plan is also one of the most effective ways to keep healthy and assist with weight loss and keep the weight off.

Start with regular small bouts of 10 minutes three times per day and gradually build up to longer sessions. If your goal is to lose weight, you will need to do physical activity for longer than 30 minutes each day and you can achieve this by starting with smaller bouts of activity throughout the day and increasing these to sessions of more than 30 minutes as your fitness improves.

Drink plenty of pure water and/or a freshly made living juice before and after your walk. If you are taking a long walk, take a water bottle with you.

Wear a pedometer

Airun Pedometer

A pedometer measures the number of steps you take. You can use it to measure your movement throughout the day and compare it to other days or to recommended amounts. This is a great motivator! The recommended number of steps accumulated per day to achieve health benefits is 10,000 steps or more.

Footwear is important

Walking is a low cost and effective form of exercise. However, the wrong type of shoe or walking action can cause foot or shin pain, blisters and injuries to soft tissue. Make sure your shoes are comfortable, with appropriate heel and arch supports. Take light, easy steps and make sure your heel touches down before your toes. Whenever possible, walk on grass rather than concrete to help absorb the impact.

* Moderate activities such as walking pose little health risk but, if you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program of physical activity.

Eat your fruit and juice your vegetables

Drink a litre of vegetable juice every day

Juice your sprouts

Add superfoods to your daily juice

Use a cold press juicer

Eat your fruit and juice your vegetables

Dr Norman Walker who started the cold pressed juicing movement was a firm believer that we should eat our fruit and juice our vegetables.

Large quantities of fruit juices can mean a significant increase in sugars which can affect the body’s sensitive chemical balance. So we recommend that you only use fruit in your juices to help make the juice more palatable, to ensure you are getting the maximum healthy start with your juicing regime.

Drink a litre of vegetable juice every day

Try and drink a litre of vegetable juice spread over the day, every day. Try this for 30 days and feel the difference. We recommend reading the books by Dr. Norman Walker to guide your understanding. His book ‘Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Juices’ is a complete guide to raw juices and their elements and explains how to use juice therapy for maximum results. The book describes 150 ailments and recommends which juices to use, in what proportions and why.

Juice your sprouts

Dr Brian R. Clement, Director Hippocrates Health Institute, Florida, USA, states that ‘the healing qualities of sprouts especially when juiced are evident, as sprouts are the most alive of the living foods’. Broccoli is considered the new wonder sprout due to the sulforaphane contained therein, which has been proven to enhance cancer-fighting enzymes. A handful of sprouts can be added to any of the juice recipes we have available.

Add superfoods to your daily juice

Getting your regular dose of superfoods is essential to increase your quality of life and slow down the aging process. Many different superfoods have been used throughout history and are believed to maximise your chances of living as long as possible and increase your quality of life as you age by reducing the incidence of disease.

Use a cold press juicer

In October 2007, Australia’s leading consumer authority Choice tested the claim the cold-press-style machines’ juice is more nutritious and that it’ll stay fresh and tasty for up to 48 hours. They found that the manufacturers’ claims are true… and Vitality 4 Life has the best juicers!

Choice tested 12 leading brands of juicers and voted the Greenpower Hippocrates juicer and the Oscar Vital Max 900 ‘What to Buy’ in the cold press juicer range.

The gentle, slow-turning action of a cold press juicer produces a greater quantity of juice, which retains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients and fibre than high-speed centrifugal juicers which heat up the juice, allow air to enter and therefore cause damage to some of the perishable nutrients.

Did you know the average Australian spends approximately 80% of their time indoors? Air pollution is thought to be a problem related to outdoor air, but the same pollutants plus more can be found inside the home. Indoor air pollution is a build up of dust particles, pet hair, seasonal allergens, building and furnishing materials, cleaning products, toiletries, cosmetics, perfumes, hobby products, plastic packaging, carbon emissions and more. Perfumes & deodorants can contain as many as 100 ingredients and are very potent additions to indoor air pollution.

Unfiltered tap water contains chemicals that vaporize and are inhaled or absorbed through the skin, potentially causing adverse health effects.

Modern buildings are designed to be energy efficient so as to maintain temperature, but as a consequence they do not breathe. This allows air pollutants to accumulate inside, as they cannot escape. Old buildings often contain lead paints, asbestos and other toxic building materials. Research suggests long periods of exposure to this “chemical cocktail” can contribute to a large range of health problems.

Instant Fixes To Detox Your Home

Open the windows daily, especially when using appliances

Use natural body care & cleaning products

When redecorating, use non-toxic paints and materials

Indoor plants are natural air filters – rotate them regularly as plants need time outside to flourish

Vitality 4 Life “Living Food Kitchen”

Diet related illnesses and obesity are on the increase all over the world, due largely to the increase in the consumption of over-processed foods.
Chlorine and synthetic chemicals such as THMs and VOCs vaporize from tap water and are inhaled or absorbed through the skin, potentially causing adverse health effects. The Rhino Whole of House water filter by Aquasana allows you to filter the water at “point of entry” enabling the removal of chlorine and synthetic chemicals such as THMs and VOCs, guaranteeing a healthier home environment.

Research suggests long periods of exposure to this type of toxic environment can contribute to a large range of health problems.
