Juicing My Way Into Health
Posted by Cristiane Dias On August 7th, 2013
My name is Cris, I’m 28 years old and I live in Sydney. That’s how most testimonials begin and this could not be any different.
I will tell you my journey to health and fitness, to start, I’m not a pro, just a regular working chick in her late 20’s trying to achieve the dream of a perfect body. Even though I’m far from perfection (which I learned, does not exist), I’m each day one step closer to reaching my goal.
That’s how it got started….
I was overweight, chronic back pain, allergies were the most unwanted visitor of my life, every day getting home from work I felt miserable. Looking in the mirror just made me angry and clothes that I liked didn’t fit me, which made me frustrated and depressed. Sounds familiar???
I tried everything, fad diets from celebrity magazines, fasting, prescription drugs, miracle teas from Narnia, anything you can imagine, I was ready to try a witch doctor and I’m not joking.
My partner Brent, seeing my misery, made me watch a documentary called Food Matters, which I highly recommend, regular people talking about their journeys to weight loss and health, inspired by the documentary we got a Oscar Neo DA1000 juicer from Vitality 4 Life.
Yay! I bought a juicer! Good for me! Now what?
Well, I went to the supermarket and got lots of fruits and veggies. Apple, celery, spinach, kale, lemons, oranges, watermelon and some other things I can’t remember. I felt so proud, everybody at the store looking at my trolley full of greens and I was feeling awesome!
Once I got home, I was ready to juice it all, started with 1 apple and 1 carrot as the base and added celery, spinach, kale, added a spring onion ( I didn’t know what it was), in my head was: if it’s green, juice it, it’s good for you. It was disgusting, on my first sip I dropped the glass in the sink and promised myself I was going to burn the juicer.
My partner was laughing and explained to me how it works, the right quantity of fruits and veggies to use, and to start with a combination with things that I liked first and go experimenting with in time as I get used to it. It was a very mild version of the juices I currently drink, but it was a great start.
If you are new to juicing, my advise is to start with what you are familiar with and slowly add different things, some combinations will be a match made in heaven and others it’s better to not even remember.
My first juice recipe:
- 3 x large granny smith apples
- 3 x carrots
- 2 x leafs of silverbeet
- 1 x leaf of kale
- 1 x lemon
I would love if you could share your best juice recipe on the comments below.
