JUICING

What's the best way to start juicing?
We found from personal experience and from customer feedback that it's a great idea to find a special place to put your juicer, a place where it stays, either on the kitchen bench or on a special table near the fridge for example. This way, everything is set up and ready to go. Place the juicer reasonably close to the edge of the bench so you are looking directly over it and can apply the right amount of pressure.

Benefits of juicing?
One of the best things about juicing is that you know what you are drinking. It's a completely natural vitamin, mineral and enzyme hit. As the food we eat is no longer the same quality as it once was, it's important to get a dose of fresh vegetable and fruit juice to make up for this deficiency. Also, by removing the fibre, by way of turning vegetables into a juice, your digestive organs get a much needed rest.

What sort of produce is best?
Ideally, organic produce is the way to go. Vegetables grown in organic soil will have a higher mineral content from the soil...other vegetables grown in depleted soil may be degraded. Bulk buying groups can be found in many cities and town, or try the local growers markets.

If you are using produce from the supermarket, it's a really good idea to wash or peel it thoroughly to remove any harmful waxes and pesticides. You can also buy a natural wash to remove any chemical build up or perhaps you could try using Apple Cider Vinegar.

How do I know what to juice?
As a general rule, it's good to juice your vegetables and eat your fruits. Make carrots the basis of your juice and then go for it. There are many juice recipe books available including the Norman Walker series which go through all the benefits derived from using different fruits and vegetables.

Is there a juicing recipe book?
Yes. Vitality 4 Life commissioned a raw food nutritionist to write a recipe book particularly using our juicers. This woman, Ragini Buffart developed more than 200 hundred original juice and living food recipes. The Living Food Recipe Book goes through the nutritional benefits of each type of juice, and even details a shopping list for beginning you transition to a diet higher in raw foods.

Do I need internal cleansing?
Everyone does! Why? We are all exposed contaminating factors on a daily basis. Even if we eat organic foods, drink bottled water, and avoid smog filled cities, there are still unavoidable pollutants in our air, and water.

What are common symptoms of a toxic body?
Poor elimination, bloating, gas, brain fog, forgetfulness, headaches, allergies, overeating, poor circulation, fatigue, mood swings, bad breath, stiff joints, cold hands and feet, recurring infections, indigestion, poor skin, cellulite, and lower back pain are only some of the symptoms.

Why is raw food good for us?
Raw juices are for everybody. Unlike cooked food, the nutrients found in juices retain their natural molecule structure, which the body recognizes instantly and puts to work immediately - without a lengthy digestion time. You are ingesting live food, that's why you feel better!

Why is juicing so good for you?
Raw vegetables and fruit juices taken daily will guarantee that the body receives its quota of building material for its trillions of cells. It provides a daily dose of enzymes - the catalyst for a well functioning metabolism. Without enzymes there is no digestion. As we grow older our bodies make less and less digestive enzymes. As we slow down, so too does our digestion. Lack of enzymes causes poor digestion, which in turn makes it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients from food intake. In the long run the immune system weakens and we become susceptible to sickness and disease. Supplying our bodies with more enzymes from raw juices is like making deposits in your own health bank account.

Why is it important to have an alkaline system?
Freshly pressed juices are alkaline. They purge the body of toxins by activating a cleansing of all cell structures and by neutralizing excessive acids and crating an alkaline - acid balance. The metabolic process is constantly producing acids, especially with a carnivorous diet. The lack of a proper alkaline counter balance will inevitably lead to an overly acidic body environment, making the body susceptible to all kinds of ailments. An acidic body attracts colds and flu, rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer.

What if I suffer stomach or intestinal ulcers?
Often people with these conditions cannot eat raw vegetables, however they will easily drink soothing and healing carrot juice. Raw potato juice will do wonders for an ailing stomach. The juice is alkaline and will provide enzymes to aid digestion.

Can babies drink juice?
Raw carrot juice is excellent for babies. It can be mixed with milk and fed as soon as the baby needs a little more than mother's milk. Straight carrot juice can be fed to babies after they are weaned; it provides the pro-vitamin beta-carotene as well as minerals and contributes to rich blood and good skin colour. There will be no colic, cradle cap or skin rashes.

What is wrong with my old centrifugal juicer?
Probably the most common, these juicers grind the fruit and vegetables by pushing them against a strainer at a very high speed. The heat and the static electricity destroys a large percentage of the nutrients and enzymes. They also cause oxidation to occur more rapidly.

So many types of juicers, how can I pick what is best for my needs?
Quality really counts here - beware of "el-cheapo's". I have personally made mistakes. Generally there is a good reason for a machine to be cheap. For a machine to obtain juice from wheatgrass and other fruits and vegetables, it takes a lot of force and crushing power and therefore a very strong machine is required.

For example, to juice a carrot an auger has to pulverise and crush it through a superfine sieve, and keep on doing so year after year. All of the parts and the motor need to be super strong. Superior quality usually costs more.

What is the difference between centrifugal and masticating juicers vs. slow turning juicers?
There are generally 3 different categories of juicers.

Centrifugal: Probably the most common, these juicers grind the fruit and vegetables by pushing them against a strainer at a very high speed. The heat and the static electricity destroys a large percentage of the nutrients and enzymes. They also cause oxidation to occur more rapidly.

Masticating: Is a little slower than centrifugal juicers but still quite fast. These types of juicers chew the pulp and then push it through a sieve. This method also destroys a lot of the nutrients and enzymes and is also not suitable for wheatgrass.

Slow turning/cold press: These machines turn at a lot slower speed and are by far superior when it comes to retaining as many nutrients and enzymes as possible in your juice. They can be slower to juice but can do basically everything that a centrifugal and masticating juicer can do and more (including making nut butters, deserts, soups and babyfoods), as well as extracting juice from wheatgrass.

What is the difference between manual or electric juicers?

This is a personal choice. Often the decision is made due to budgetary constraints, and you may choose a manual over an electric due to the cheaper price. However, generally the electric machines are a lot easier to use, a lot quicker and extract more juice. When it comes to cleaning both sorts are pretty similar. Some people may choose a manual juicer for environmental reasons for not using electricity. Manual juicers generally don't have the same amount of features as electric machines and don't juice as big a variety of fruits and vegetables etc.

WATER (from WATER - THE ULTIMATE CURE by Norman Walker)

Why do I need to drink more water?
Dehydration renders the immune system ineffective and unresponsive. It causes the destruction of some primary amino acids as antioxidants when toxic waste builds up in the body. Some of these amino acids are involved in the enzyme systems that recognize and repair the genetic damage and incorrect DNA transcriptions.

The loss of essential amino acids and elements force the cells in a drought stricken area to lose sophistication of function and become primitive and selfish, with self-replicating properties. Dehydration will also cause low-oxygen and high acidity environments that are more suited for cancer cell development than the original normal tissues.

What functions does water play in the human body?
Your body is approximately 67% water by weight. If your body's water content drops by as little as 2% you will feel fatigued. If it drops by 10% you will experience significant health problems.

Water:
* Improves oxygen delivery to the cells
* Transports nutrients
* Enables cellular hydration
* Moistens oxygen for eaiser breathing
* Cushions bones and joints
* Regulates body temperature
* Removes wastes
* Flushes toxins
* Prevents tissues from sticking
* Lubricates joints
* Improves cell to cell communications
* Maintains normal electrical properties of cells
* Empowers the body's natural healing process

What is distillation and how does it work?
Based on Mother Nature's primary purification method, distillation uses evaporation and condensation to separate pure, fresh water from its contaminants. In nature the process is called the hydrologic cycle. It occurs when water evaporates, condenses, then falls to the earth as precipitation.

Distillation, combined with carbon filtration, is the one water treatment technology that most completely reduces the widest range of contaminants, including biological, organic and inorganic elements. In fact, a quality distillation system provides water that is up to 99% free of impurities, including heavy metals and most chemicals. It is the treatment of choice for removing biological contaminants including cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The prolonged boiling process of distillation kills virtually all types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Microorganisms are not evaporated into the product water but remain in the boiling chamber as part of the residue. Additionally, a distillation system with activated carbon post filtration and venting is effective in removing pesticides and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

The purity of your drinking and cooking water is guaranteed when you make 100% steam distilled water with a Waterwise purifier/distiller.

What are the benefits of whole house filtration?
By filtering all of the water that enters your home, you not only greatly enhance the healthfulness of your household water, but you also dramatically improve your indoor air quality. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), "Every home in America has an elevated level of chloroform gas present due to the vaporization of chlorine... from tap and shower water." Chlorine vapors are a suspected cause and irritant of respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and allergies. Filtered water will improve every aspect of your family's health.

FAR INFRARED SAUNAS

What is far infrared? Is it safe?
Far infrared is an energy. It is the natural, resonant frequency range of water and all organic matter - even humans. The wave length of infrared energy is between 0.7 microns and 1000 microns, just beyond the frequency range of visible light. And one part of this range is 5 to 15 microns which is far infrared. Far infrared energy waves are the safest and most beneficial energy source available. Soft Heat Saunas are approved with all national authorities and are totally safe. It is so gentle - that it is used in hospitals to warm premature babies.

WHEATGRASS SPROUTING

How much wheatgrass juice should I drink?
We recommend you start with 30mls of wheatgrass juice followed with a glass of water for the first few days. Once you are comfortable with this you can increase the amount up to 60mls, eg. 30mls twice a day. Wheatgrass has a strong cleansing effect and may make you nauseous if you start with too much.

Experienced users may drink up to 230mls per day, and therapeutic doses for treating serious illness may require 230 – 900 mls per day.

When should I drink my wheatgrass?

Ideally it is best to drink the juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.   Wheatgrass juice is assimilated into the blood in about 20 minutes, and the vitality lasts throughtout the day.

Can I still use wheatgrass while I am pregnant/breast feeding?
From our experience we can say that using wheatgrass during pregnancy and during breast feeding has been completely safe for us, and that we also believe that it has helped with our own health and for your baby. 30-60mls daily.

Wheatgrass is high in folate (a B group vitamin), which is important during both pregnancy and breastfeeding for growth and development of the baby.

Every case is different and if you are unsure consult your doctor or naturopath for more information.

What if I am allergic to Gluten?
Although wheatgrass is grown from a grain, it has been completely transformed into a vegetable and so is absolutely non-allergenic.  Make sure that you don't include any of the grain when you juice your wheatgrass.
