Most of us know drinking pure water is essential to life – so what’s in our water that’s potentially unhealthy?

Chlorine and lead is in everybody’s water, but there are also traces of pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, bacteria. Really, every chemical we use in our society works its way into our water supplies.

What people aren’t aware of is that municipal water treatment doesn’t take those things out. It’s designed to kill bacteria, take out the visible particles, but does not take out synthetic organic chemicals; we need to do that in our own homes.

What can those chemicals do to our bodies?

Synthetic organic chemicals increase the risk of degenerative disease and cancer. Almost all types of cancer are linked to increased exposure of synthetic organic chemicals; pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, trihalomethanes; the things that happen when they put chlorine in your water.

Colon cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer have all been directly linked to an increased consumption in synthetic chemicals.

What to do… bottled water?

Bottled water doesn’t necessarily assure you that you’re getting chemical free water. The regulations that govern bottled water are more lapsed than the ones that govern tap water. Bottled water is less regulated than tap water so it’s a misconception people have that bottled water is necessarily any purer than tap water.

Most studies show that bottled water contains at least most of the chemicals that tap water does. Any water that’s stored in a plastic bottle is going to contain some of the chemicals from that plastic that leach into the water.

Filtering your water in your own home doesn’t have the environmental impact that bottled water does of throwing away plastic bottles everyday. Bottled water is more expensive, it’s less convenient and tragic on the environment. 60 million plastic bottles get thrown into landfills every day in America alone.

The only way to get chemical free water is to filter it in your own home…

It’s less expensive

It’s more convenient

It’s better quality

It’s environmentally friendly

You can fill your own refillable bottles right at your kitchen sink with a good quality home water filter and you’ve got better quality filtered water at 1/10 of the price.

What about the water we bathe and shower in?

All the most recent studies such as the American Journal of Public Health and the World Health Organization have published reports that say we take in 3 times the chemicals when we shower than we do from drinking water.

The steam that you inhale plus the pores of your skin are open because of the warn water and you absorb chemicals through your lungs and your skin. So it’s at least as important to make sure the water you’re showering and bathing in is chemical free water, as well as your drinking water.

With a standard water testing kit available from any pool supply shop, you can test the chlorine levels in your own water. When we tested our water, we found the tap water to be borderline as what’s considered safe to swim in, so it’s pretty easy to grasp that it’s probably not the best water to be drinking, showering and bathing in.

What should we do in our homes?

Filter your water…

There’s many ways to filter your water, point of use water filtration; a water filter can be installed in the kitchen either on the bench, fitted quickly and easily to your existing tap or under the benchtop with a separate tap for your filtered water so you can easily filter your drinking water, cooking water, water you’re making beverages with; coffees, teas, juices, etc.

In your shower; shower filtration, you can easily install a filter in your shower or there’s central filtration – a whole house water filter, which can be installed very easily and very economically.

With a whole house filter, for not much more than $1000 you can filter all your water throughout your entire household where you’re bathing, drinking, showering, cooking, laundry, everything in good healthy chemical free water.

According to the Australian Health Department, 75 minutes of walking per week will improve health & fitness levels significantly.

Get active and walk

Walking is low impact and benefits include improved cardiovascular fitness, stronger bones and reduced body fat, plus it’s suitable for almost everyone.

Seven Top Walking Tips…

Look for walking opportunities; park your car a little further away from your destination

Get off public transport or the elevator one stop earlier and walk!

Walk for 30 minutes per day or set a distance each day and stick to it

Become a tourist in your own town and take the nature or scenic walks on occasion

Regular leisurely walks around your neighbourhood may lead to new friends!

Make walking a pleasure by having the correct footwear and clothing to suit conditions

Before walking, remind yourself how much better you will feel afterwards!

Building physical activity into your life

Physical activity built into a daily lifestyle plan is also one of the most effective ways to keep healthy and assist with weight loss and keep the weight off.

Start with regular small bouts of 10 minutes three times per day and gradually build up to longer sessions. If your goal is to lose weight, you will need to do physical activity for longer than 30 minutes each day and you can achieve this by starting with smaller bouts of activity throughout the day and increasing these to sessions of more than 30 minutes as your fitness improves.

Drink plenty of pure water and/or a freshly made living juice before and after your walk. If you are taking a long walk, take a water bottle with you.

Wear a pedometer

Airun Pedometer

A pedometer measures the number of steps you take. You can use it to measure your movement throughout the day and compare it to other days or to recommended amounts. This is a great motivator! The recommended number of steps accumulated per day to achieve health benefits is 10,000 steps or more.

Footwear is important

Walking is a low cost and effective form of exercise. However, the wrong type of shoe or walking action can cause foot or shin pain, blisters and injuries to soft tissue. Make sure your shoes are comfortable, with appropriate heel and arch supports. Take light, easy steps and make sure your heel touches down before your toes. Whenever possible, walk on grass rather than concrete to help absorb the impact.

* Moderate activities such as walking pose little health risk but, if you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program of physical activity.

Eat your fruit and juice your vegetables

Drink a litre of vegetable juice every day

Juice your sprouts

Add superfoods to your daily juice

Use a cold press juicer

Eat your fruit and juice your vegetables

Dr Norman Walker who started the cold pressed juicing movement was a firm believer that we should eat our fruit and juice our vegetables.

Large quantities of fruit juices can mean a significant increase in sugars which can affect the body’s sensitive chemical balance. So we recommend that you only use fruit in your juices to help make the juice more palatable, to ensure you are getting the maximum healthy start with your juicing regime.

Drink a litre of vegetable juice every day

Try and drink a litre of vegetable juice spread over the day, every day. Try this for 30 days and feel the difference. We recommend reading the books by Dr. Norman Walker to guide your understanding. His book ‘Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Juices’ is a complete guide to raw juices and their elements and explains how to use juice therapy for maximum results. The book describes 150 ailments and recommends which juices to use, in what proportions and why.

Juice your sprouts

Dr Brian R. Clement, Director Hippocrates Health Institute, Florida, USA, states that ‘the healing qualities of sprouts especially when juiced are evident, as sprouts are the most alive of the living foods’. Broccoli is considered the new wonder sprout due to the sulforaphane contained therein, which has been proven to enhance cancer-fighting enzymes. A handful of sprouts can be added to any of the juice recipes we have available.

Add superfoods to your daily juice

Getting your regular dose of superfoods is essential to increase your quality of life and slow down the aging process. Many different superfoods have been used throughout history and are believed to maximise your chances of living as long as possible and increase your quality of life as you age by reducing the incidence of disease.

Use a cold press juicer

In October 2007, Australia’s leading consumer authority Choice tested the claim the cold-press-style machines’ juice is more nutritious and that it’ll stay fresh and tasty for up to 48 hours. They found that the manufacturers’ claims are true… and Vitality 4 Life has the best juicers!

Choice tested 12 leading brands of juicers and voted the Greenpower Hippocrates juicer and the Oscar Vital Max 900 ‘What to Buy’ in the cold press juicer range.

The gentle, slow-turning action of a cold press juicer produces a greater quantity of juice, which retains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients and fibre than high-speed centrifugal juicers which heat up the juice, allow air to enter and therefore cause damage to some of the perishable nutrients.

Hippocrates Twin Gear Juicer

Did you know the average Australian spends approximately 80% of their time indoors? Air pollution is thought to be a problem related to outdoor air, but the same pollutants plus more can be found inside the home. Indoor air pollution is a build up of dust particles, pet hair, seasonal allergens, building and furnishing materials, cleaning products, toiletries, cosmetics, perfumes, hobby products, plastic packaging, carbon emissions and more. Perfumes & deodorants can contain as many as 100 ingredients and are very potent additions to indoor air pollution.

Unfiltered tap water contains chemicals that vaporize and are inhaled or absorbed through the skin, potentially causing adverse health effects.

Modern buildings are designed to be energy efficient so as to maintain temperature, but as a consequence they do not breathe. This allows air pollutants to accumulate inside, as they cannot escape. Old buildings often contain lead paints, asbestos and other toxic building materials. Research suggests long periods of exposure to this “chemical cocktail” can contribute to a large range of health problems.

Instant Fixes To Detox Your Home

Open the windows daily, especially when using appliances

Use natural body care & cleaning products

When redecorating, use non-toxic paints and materials

Indoor plants are natural air filters – rotate them regularly as plants need time outside to flourish

Vitality 4 Life “Living Food Kitchen”

A recipe for vitality…for life

A healthy eating plan differs from the idea of “dieting”. For one thing, it’s not based on depriving yourself of anything that your body craves.

It all starts with Healthy Food

It’s also not a menu of recipes recommended to you to eat at certain times of the day.

A healthy eating plan is more like healthy ways of eating and healthy foods you can add to your diet, which may naturally change the way you eat and what you choose to eat over time.

A healthy eating plan involves an educational process – the more you understand about the foods you eat, the more you will naturally make healthier choices without feeling deprived in any way.

A good balance of alkaline vs. acid in your diet is as essential to a healthy eating plan as getting enough essential vitamins and minerals. In general, it is important to eat a diet that contains both acidic and alkalizing foods. People vary, but for most, the ideal diet is 75 percent alkalizing and 25 percent acidifying (foods by volume).

Living juice, living food and pure water are 3 essential ingredients for anyone embarking on a healthy eating plan.

Living Juice

Living juice is fresh juice, not packaged or processed, that’s made with a “living juicer”, that is a non-centrifugal juicer or cold press juicer. Centrifugal juicers create friction heat and destroy vital nutrients and enzymes, whereas cold press juicers create a juice which is brimming with life and vitality.

Living Foods

Living foods such as fresh sprouts are very high in enzymatic activity. Green sprouts are rich in chlorophyll and are the best for cleansing and detoxifying the system. Sprouted grains give us Chromium for weight stabilizing, vanadium, and manganese for nerve function, selenium that many people are deficient in, B vitamins, essential amino acids lysine and methionine.

Pure Water

The importance of pure water cannot be underestimated in the quest for good health. In most cases, the body is very resilient to illness and disease and the body’s kidneys are designed to take on the job of purifying when we put impure foods, air and water into our bodies, it’s true. But both the World Health Organization and the National Cancer Institute suggest that most human cancers, perhaps as many as 90% are caused by chemical carcinogens in the environment and unpurified water is full of contaminants from farming, industry, pollution, water treatment, etc.

Conclusion

A healthy eating plan is essential for long term quality of life and when combined with a balanced exercise routine, you can create your own sustainable recipe for a long and healthy life.

Vitality 4 Life is a world leader the design and distribution of products for a healthy home. Our criteria remains simple; the product must offer the customer superior value and quality, deliver genuine health benefits and be made in a way that recognises the scarcity of our planets resources.

During the past 15 years we have never forgotten why we started Vitality 4 Life and our belief in the healing power of living food, living juice, pure water, fresh air and sunshine.

“The most fundamental action a person can take that will dramatically increase their vitality is to increase the amount of Living Food and Pure Water they consume.”
Roger Akins, founder of Vitality 4 Life

Home composting is easy, rewarding and very beneficial to our environment. It’s natural, inexpensive and fun! It’s good for your garden and great for the planet too!

Home Composting and the Environment

According to Compost Australia about 60% of the rubbish Australians put in the everyday mixed-waste ‘garbage bin’ could be put to better use in the garden as compost and mulch or could be returned to agricultural land to improve soil quality. Using compost in your garden also reduces the need for water by an average of 30%.

Home Composting Mulch

Alarmingly, such a huge amount of organically active material buried ‘anaerobically’ (without air) in landfill causes over 3% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions annually by producing methane; a gas with 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. If properly composted instead, this same organic waste could help to abate climate change in yet another way; by sinking or ‘sequestering’ carbon back into the soil.

Whether it be just doing your bit for the environment and or using waste as a resource to boost your garden’s magic, composting is for most a rewarding and satisfying experience.

Since over half of what we throw into our rubbish bins is organic waste such as food scraps, coffee grindings, egg shells and garden cuttings, why not put it to better use in the garden as compost and mulch.

Creating a Compost Heap

The ideal location for a compost heap has reasonable drainage and is well shaded in summer. Mark out an area for your compost heap (it’s a good idea to have 2 compartments. Anything can be used such as chicken wire & tomato or bamboo stakes, railway sleepers, scrap timber & tin.

To build the compost heap, start with a thick layer of twigs or coarse mulch at the base for drainage. Then follow the easy A,B,C formula to build a heap layer upon layer.

A. Thin layer of kitchen organics and green garden organics.
B. Cover with a layer of brown garden organics ensuring no food waste is left exposed.
C. Moisten well.

Then repeat A,B,C. If you get the ratio of wet & dry matter right, moisture plus aeration, you should have usable compost in around 90 days.

What to Compost

Anything that was once a plant or animal can be composted, including fruit and vegetable peelings, newspapers, grass clippings, weeds, tea leaves, coffee grounds, egg shells, old potting mix, dead flowers, lint, dust, human and animal hair.

Compost is a mix of different materials:

Nitrogen rich kitchen organics such as egg shells, fruit and vegetable peelings and green garden organics such as fresh grass clippings, green leaves, weeds and manure. Shredded paper & cardboard such as toilet rolls and paper bags add carbon to the mix.

Nitrogen poor brown garden organics such as dry leaves, woody twigs, paper and straw

Moisture – dry materials won’t compost without it!

Air – it is important allow air to circulate through the compost so it doesn’t smell. This can be done by occasionally turning it with a garden fork or by placing some pieces of pvc pipe through the heap to allow air in.

Tips & Hints for Home Composting

Avoid placing meat or dairy products in your compost until you are confident and experienced.

Keep a bucket with a well-sealed lid in the kitchen to collect food scraps.

Use the lawn mower to chop up coarse garden prunings.

Don’t let the compost get too wet, cover your heap – it should be just moist, not wet. If you have a wet or saturated compost heap, mix more dry brown garden organics through it, turn it.

Layers of sticks and branches will help air circulate through the heap if it gets too damp.

A sprinkling of dolomite will improve pH and make richer compost while helping minimise odours.

What is a Centrifugal Juicer?

Centrifugal juicers are the most common juicers used. Centrifugal juicers work by using a flat cutting blade at the base of a rapidly spinning strainer. Heat, static electricity and large amounts of air are drawn in; nutrients are destroyed as oxidation occurs. Essential enzymes in fruit and vegetable juice die at temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. Any juice extractor using a high-speed blade or centrifuge creates friction heat and destroys vital nutrients. Juicing machines will allow you to take control of the quality of the produce, but extraction methods can still destroy vital nutrients, vitamins and living enzymes. How the conventional/centrifugal juicer works.. The centrifugal force passes the produce through tiny holes in the strainer. The strainers are difficult to clean and they can’t juice wheatgrass or leafy green vegetables effectively and economically. The pulp builds up in the strainer and the machine needs to be periodically emptied, making continuous juicing impossible. So there’s a lot of noise, a poor quality juice, a stop & start process, a large amount of wasted produce (wet pulp – not dry) and a difficult clean up afterward. No wonder so many people buy a juicer with good intentions for their health and the health of their loved ones and then give up shortly afterward!

What is a Living Juicer?

Masticating Juicers

Masticating Juicers run at a slower rate than most centrifugal juicers. Masticating juicers break down more fibre more thoroughly than centrifugal juicers to release more nutrients. The Champion 2000+ is a Masticating Juicer

Cold-Press Juicers

Single gear cold-press juicers use a slow turning auger to crush or squeeze the fruit or vegetables. The pulp is then pushed through a sieve and the juice is filtered into a bowl. The Oscar 900 VitalMax, Oscar 502, Oscar 930 Pro, Galaxy and Samson Juicer are all Single Gear Cold-Press Juicers.

Twin-Gear Juicers

Twin-Gear juicers are cold press juicers that have two stainless steel gears/screws the rotate inwards towards each other, crushing and grinding fruit and vegetables to extract the juice. These juicers work extremely well and can extract 30% more juice from produce than other juicers. The Greenpower Hippocrates Juicer is the ultimate Twin-Gear Juicer

Health Benefits of Centrifugal vs Non-Centrifugal Juicers

The juice from non-centrifugal juicers doesn’t separate, smells fresh and looks palatable and green after 48 hours in the fridge

So which is better?

There are several advantages in buying a non-centrifugal or cold press juicer:

The juice will last longer and contain more enzymes and nutrients than juice from a centrifugal juicer

They produce a greater quantity of juice and a higher quality juice

They have fewr parts and are easier to clean

They are much quieter than centrifugal juicers

Most can juice green vegetables, wheatgrass and herbs

Some double as a living food processor and you can make pasta, nut butter, baby foods, gourmet dips and even ice cream!

Often their warranties are longer than centrifugal juicers

The gentle, slow-turning action of a cold-press juicer produces a greater quantity of juice, which retains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fibre than the juice produces from centrifugal juicers. The high speed of centrifugal juicers heat up the juice, allow air to enter and damage some of the perishable nutrients.

Processed bottled juice on supermarket shelves comes in all forms – plastic or glass bottles, canned, refrigerated cartons or vacuum packed and can last up to 2 years.

The fruit processing industry uses powerful yet the same low speed extraction process as the cold press juicers to extract the maximum yield of juice from the fruit.

Once cold pressed, fresh fruit juice is quickly pasteurised or heat treated at around 90?C. This heating process has been shown to destroy certain nutrients and changes the pH from alkaline to acid. Most antioxidants are heat sensitive and can reduce by 15% each time a juice is heated.

By the time the juice is packed and sold in the supermarket or deli it may have been heated at 2 or 3 locations to get in the final bottle and the long term storage of pasteurised juice leads to a further breakdown of nutrients over time.

If you look closely at the ingredients, you will see that a lot of juice companies use juice concentrates to save costs, but regardless of whether the juice is made from concentrate or not, the alkaline properties and naturally occurring nutrients are greatly diminished. These juice concentrates are often imported and typically involve hours of heating to remove the water, leaving little nutritional value behind.

All these ingredients can be bought inexpensively from your local supermarket…

SURFACE & CERAMIC CLEANER

Use bicarbonate of soda on a damp cloth to clean benchtops, sinks and your refrigerator or freezer surfaces. Store in a flour shaker to keep it dry. Make a paste from borax & water or lemon juice with a few drops of tea tree oil for cleaning non-septic toilet bowls, tiles & baths.

WINDOW CLEANER

Add half a cup of vinegar to a litre of warm water. Wash the window first with warm soapy water if especially dirty. Use crumpled newspaper moistened with vinegar to get a beautiful sheen. For mirrors, apply eucalyptus oil with a wad of newspaper to prevent fogging.

CARPET CLEANER

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on carpet before vacuuming to deodorise. It’s also a great stain remover. Just brush up and vacuum when dry.

WOODEN FLOORS

Add some Methylated Spirits and a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bucket of warm water for mopping. This mixture helps prevent fleas.

AIR FRESHENER

Add a few drops ofyour favourite essential oils to a spray water bottle. Antibacterial Essential Oils such as Eucalytus, Lavender and Tea Tree Oil add freshness to toilet bowls.

LAUNDRY

A mixture of pure soap, lemon juice & washing soda removes stains and softens water so you need less detergent.

PEST CONTROL

Borax can be used to control pests such as ants and cockroaches. Diluted Eucalytus Oil wiped on surfaces prevents spiders making webs. Hydrated lime sprinkled on the garden changes the pH so fleas can’t breed!

Oscar Juicer – Compare to “me too’ Brand Juicers

Invented by Mr Kim in Korea the Oscar was the original single gear juicer. . Compact, easy to clean, very efficient and created a fibre free juice the Oscar was a significant evolution from the previous expensive, large and messy processors available. When introduced some 10 years ago to Australia by Vitality 4 Life it represented a leap forward in making living juice accessible to more people.

Several companies copied the early Oscar design and these machines have flooded the International market place. These brands falsely claimed to be the new model Oscar or Oscars new name and many customers have purchased these brands believing they were buying an Oscar. These brands are much more profitable because they are less expensive to manufacture. They use cheaper components or engineering methods that both Oscar and Vitality 4 life find unacceptable.

Did you buy the juicer with the most profit or the juicer with the most value?

If you purchased one of these brands and were told it was an Oscar or made in the same factory as Oscar you may have consumer rights and should contact the consumer regulation authorities in your area.

The only way we could combat these events was to do what we do best and build a better juicer.

The result is the Oscar VitalMax.

While other brands are offering a cheap ‘me too’ of what we designed 10 years ago the latest Oscar VitalMax has the following features:
