The two compartments allow continous composting - simply fill one side by adding your daily scraps and as it finishes decomposing for an additional week or two, simply start on the other side. Then you can empty the decomposed side using the metal sheet provided to cover the side that's just begun.

The metal sheet allows you to close off the side you are using when you turn the barrel towards the ground for emptying, yet when you have the unit opening upright, you can easily access both sides, depending on which of the two "doors" you choose to work from.... how easy is that!
